BMJR Models, Inc. :: Airframes
Harold Reinhardt's 1955 Stunt Wing
MSRP: $98.50 In the March 1955 issue, MAN reported; "Toughest stunt pattern in America is the Mirror Flying Fair in New York. The winning plane must be tops. This is that ship." This plane, designed by Harold "Red" Reinhardt at age 22, was built just to prove that flying wings can fly precision Stunt, and to try out a few other pet theories. One of the biggest troubles was the tendency to stall, which to overcome a balanced elevator was employed. Another trouble was insufficient wing area on most ships, which made them wide turning and too fast for Stunt. The resulting Stunt Wing flies well in the wind, is smooth and stable, and is not too fast for competition.
The BMJR Stunt Wing has a span of 47-1/2 inches and an area of 596 square inches and a flying weight of around 35 ounces.

N-Tech Jets even includes a simple cockpit and instrument panel, just add a pilot and you'll have a good looking finished cockpit.
The Jet Hangar E-Turbax 120mm fan system is recommended for this model. This provides great speed, thrust, and climb at a price much cheaper than most high performance fans in this size and performance specification class.

Black Hawk Models :: Airframes
Mini Stunt Rocket
MSRP: $45.00 (Catalog No. PS 4700) Following on the heels of their Stunt Rocket, designed for .40 to .60 engines, Black Hawk Models has released the new half-A Mini Stunt Rocket. This profile model has a 27-inch wing span and a whopping 175.5 square inch wing area. While this may seem large for a half-A (.049) engine, the finished model weighs in at fewer than 6 ounces (without the engine). As with all Black Hawk Models kits, this kit comes with excellent balsa wood and plywood parts. The kit is laser cut for accuracy and ease of construction and includes full size plans and instruction manual. BHM has always prided itself on providing complete hardware packages and this kit comes with extra parts so that any .049 engine may be used. Retro RC LLC :: Airframes
SinBad the Sailor 36 / ThinBad the Sailor
MSRP: $49.99 / 43.99 Retro RC LLC is pleased to announce two new nostalgic glider kits, the R/C SinBad the Sailor 36 (shown here) and F/F ThinBad the Sailor, both inspired by the 50-inch wing span 1941 Berkley Sinbad the Sailor. Like all of their high-quality laser-cut model airplane kits, they are designed and manufactured in Michigan.
SinBad the Sailor 36 is the R/C version and has a fully built-up fuselage similar to its names sake but simpler to construct, while the F/F version, ThinBad the Sailor, has a 5⁄8-inch thick profile fuselage, much easier for a novice to build. SinBad can also be built and flown F/F as the kit includes the same auto-rudder mechanism as ThinBad. It is also possible to convert ThinBad to R/C, though the kit doesn't contain all components needed.
ThinBad features an auto-rudder mechanism with an "Olive Oil" pilot for tow line and hi-start launches. While the auto-rudder parts are included in the SinBad kit (in case you wish to build it F/F), being R/C you can thermal soar, slope soar, and even park fly when there is no lift available with the optional e'Power Pod that simply plugs into the two wing joiners, which transforms this thermal glider into an AMA Park Pilot Program legal aircraft. They have similar specs.
Because the tail group is removable and the wing halves are joined with wire joiners, both models can be broken down and stored in an 18 x 4 x 4-inch box.
Both kits include a complete hardware pack and ThinBad comes with two sheets of colored Esaki tissue, everything you'll need except glue, dope, sandpaper and paint. The ThinBad kit contains 134 precision laser-cut parts, while SinBad contains 147, and does not include covering material as most R/C pilots will prefer to provide their own choice of color and material. All parts are self-jigging and cut from high-quality balsa, and the easy-to-follow, photo-illustrated instructions also help make both kits a quick, easy build. ThinBad has even been used as a teaching kit for a class of 20 middle school kids.

Osprey Publishing :: Books
Aichi 99 Kanbaku "Val" Units
MSRP: $22.95 Aichi 99 Kanbaku 'Val' Units is book number 63 in Osprey's "Combat Aircraft" series, which provides comprehensive histories of fighting aircraft and their crews, highlighting their vital role in the development of warfare in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The Aichi Type 99 Carrier bomber (D3A), code named "Val" by Allied intelligence, was the mainstay of the Imperial Japanese Navy's carrier dive-bomber force from 1941 to 1943. It sank more Allied warship tonnage than any other Axis aircraft during World War 2.
While the Val's participation in the major carrier battles has been widely covered in other English language sources, details of its operations have received scant attention in English. This book explores the Val's combat operations. Color illustrations and photographs complement
the development of dive-bombing methods in the IJN.

MSRP: $22.95 AV-8B Harrier II Units of Operations Desert Storm is book number 90 in Osprey's Combat Aircraft series, which provides comprehensive histories of fighting aircraft and their crews, highlighting their vital role in the development of warfare in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The AV-8B is the only tactical aircraft that can deploy with Marine forces on amphibious assault ships and provide air cover and close air support separate from large deck aircraft carriers. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, a coalition of nations launched Operation Desert Shield in order to defend Saudi Arabia, and the Harrier II was among the first tactical air assets to be deployed to the region. During Operation Desert Storm, the five units flying the AV-8B in-theatre became some of the top tactical squadrons of choice by air mission planners because of the pilots' skill as well as the plane's vertical take-off ability.
The previously untold story of the AV-8B in this conflict is vividly brought to life by the author through first-hand accounts and period photography sourced from those that were there and official archives. This will be the first of three volumes on USMC Harrier IIs in combat, with follow-on titles covering the jet's operations in Iraq in 2003-08 and Afghanistan in 2001-2009.
Author, Lon Nordeen, has more than 35 years of aerospace industry and editorial experience. He has been employed on the staff of the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics, McDonnell-Douglas and Boeing, where he worked in the areas of market research, communications and field marketing. He is also the author of six books and more than 150 articles, and has been highlighted as an historian on multiple History Channel TV programs covering air warfare such as the Dogfight series.
A vast number of Harrier II kits in various scales are readily available, so the aircraft has a high profile in the modeling hobby at present. This 96-page softcover book contains numerous black and white and color photos and 24 color plates, which offer a good reference source for modelers.

Building the P-51 Mustang
MSRP: $34.95 (Catalog No. SP190) The P-51 Mustang holds a fascination unlike any other Workd War II aircraft, and countless books have been written about nearly every aspect of the Mustang's colorful history. However, the story of manufacturing the airplane itself is usually contained only in the opening chapters of these books. Now, for the first time, here is a major work devoted strictly to telling the story of how this legendary airplane was designed and built, using rare original factory photographs, documents, and unique engineering information. The author uses more than 300 original photos culled from his personal archive of official factory and USAAF images, many of which have never been seen in any publication whatsoever. This book will provide a vital "missing link" in the saga of this famed World War II aircraft, and is sure to become a valued addition to the libraries of P-51 modelers, historians, enthusiasts, and pilots in both the United States and England.
In the pages of Building the P-51 Mustang, author Michael O'Leary answers many questions for P-51 enthusiasts and experts alike about how the airplane's design evolved, and why many structural changes occurred during its life.
This new 240-page, 11 x 8.5-inch softbound edition contains excellent, high-quality photographs and documents showing, in great detail, every step in the process of building the P-51.

P-47 thunderbolt Units of the Twelfth Air Force
MSRP: $22.95 P-47 Thunderbolt Units of the Twelfth Air Force is book number 92 in Osprey's Combat Aircraft series. The P-47 Thunderbolt, originally designed as a high-altitude interceptor, became the principle US fighter-bomber of World War 2. First adapted to the ground attack role by units of the Twelfth Air Force in early 1944, the strength and durability of the P-47 airframe, along with its massive size, earned it the nickname "Juggernaut", which was quickly shortened to "Jug" throughout the MTO and ETO.
Almost nothing has been written on the Twelfth Air Force fighter-bomber operations in World War 2. This softcover book contains fantastic archival photos and vivid combat accounts, along with eight pages of color plates showing the variety of color schemes worn by P-47s in the MTO, which will appeal to hobbyists, as the Thunderbolt is well represented in various model scales.

Soviet Tactical Aviation
MSRP: $56.95 Specialty Press has recently released a new book, Soviet Tactical Aviation, by Yefim Gordon and Dmitriy Komissarov. At its height during the Cold War, Soviet tactical aviation was a large force of fighter, bomber, and attack air regiments with a high degree of readiness; many units stationed outside the Soviet Union saw actual combat. But, even as progressively more refined jet aircraft came into service, Yak-23, MiG-17 fighters and IL-28 tactical bombers, the attack aviation units still flew outdated IL-10 piston-engined aircraft well into the 1950s.
Soviet pilots in combat over the People's Republic of China, North Korea, and Cuba, and their role in Eastern Europe combine with more than 500 color photographs, 50 color profiles, details of units, and insignia to give an in-depth look at this important era.

Fine and Rare Model Engines Auction
On Tuesday March 20th, Dreweatts and Bloomsbury Auctions are offering three examples of finely engineered 1/4 scale models of early rotary and radial engines used in aeroplanes from both the First and Second World War. Dreweatts' Transport Sale at Apseley Rd, Bristol, UK encompasses around 300 lots ranging from locomotives, traction engines and boats to related reference books and model engines. It is however, the three model aero engines from the early days of flying that will set the pulses of international collectors (and institutions) racing. The extraordinary craftsmanship and attention to detail of all three models is superb, each was painstakingly built by a retired English engineer and each is estimated to fetch between 5,000-7,000 pound sterling ($7,900-$11,000 US).
The first piece in the group and which can justifiably be called an "engineering work of art", is the model of a Clerget 9BF rotary engine designed by Pierre Clerget in 1915 and used to power the Sopwith Camel, the most successful fighter/scout aircraft of WW1. Clerget engines were perhaps the best designed and preferred by fighter pilots and their engineers. The 9BF was a nine-cylinder rotary engine which was developed in France from 1915; and was first run in 1913. Original full size engines can be seen at the Air Arm Museum RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset. Dreweatts believes that this is the first time a model of a Clerget 9BF rotary engine of 1915 has ever appeared on the market.
The second model in the series is a finely built model of a Bentley BR2 Rotary Engine, designed by the great WO Bentley in 1916/17 at the request of the Admiralty specially to replace the Clerget and give an engine greater power and reliability. This amazing overhead valve air-cooled engine consumed around 20 gallons of fuel per hour and 16 pints of oil per hour. The BR2 was first run in 1916 and a total of 2,567 were built. Examples of the full sized engine are in the Science Museum, London and the Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford. The first 1/4 scale model of the Bentley BR2 was built by Lewis Kinleside Blackmore and is currently on display at the Bentley Memorial Building in Oxfordshire; he also published a book on the history and building of this model.
The third model and one which will undoubtedly appeal to the US market, is that of an American 18-cylinder radial engine designed by Lee Hodgson and based on the famous Pratt and Whitney Double Wasp R-2800 which powered much of the US fighter fleet, as well as many British planes. Hodgson was a chief engineer at Pratt and Whitney and their engines powered 98% of all transport used by the US military.
These three fine models of aero engines encapsulate early aviation development and each is a work of art in its own right.
