Black Hawk Models :: Airframes

Boston Blackie

MSRP: $30.00

Boston Blackie joins the ever expanding line of control line models from Black Hawk Models. This kit is precision cut from AAA balsa and plywood to make an easy to assemble model that contains all of the required hardware and an illustrated instruction manual. While the wing span is 18 inches, the chord is 4 inches giving enough wing area to provide the model with light wing loading. This means that the model is capable of doing all of the stunts that you enjoy doing. This model is designed to accept any of the Cox or OK engines that are so popular. Boston Blackie is based on a model designed by Paul Del Gatto for Scientific Models in the 1950s, called "Blackhawk". Black Hawk Models has up-graded the model with an airfoil wing and a lightweight cowling, which improved its performance. The name, Boston Blackie, comes from a '50s TV detective show, and the manufacturer felt the style of this model seemed to fit with the style of that show. When you take this model to the local flying field, you will be surprised by the amount of interest that it will generate among your flying buddies. As a special offer, if you place an order for this model kit through Boone's Hobbies (562-708-0653) and mention Flying Models magazine, they will include a free control handle and line (offer good only where permitted by law).

Duggybair Aeromodeling :: Books

Building and Flying Model Airplanes

MSRP: $15.95

Building and Flying Model Airplanes is a new publication from Duggybair Aeromodeling. The book teaches the basics of building and flying model airplanes by presenting a series of model building projects using readily available kits of aircraft known for their quality construction and good flying characteristics. The projects are presented in an order of increasing complexity with each project building on the knowledge learned in the previous chapters. The program is written as though the author is standing beside the builder and talks the person through each step of the process explaining both how and why each step is performed. The book assumes the reader has little or no previous model building experience. Building and Flying Model Airplanes was written so that anyone possessing at least a fifth grade reading ability can easily understand and follow the program successfully. It is intended to appeal to any person who wants to learn the model aircraft building and flying process, and to those currently flying ARFs and want to expand their flying experience.

Fogg in the Cockpit

MSRP: $32.95

Renowned for decades as the world's foremost railroad artist, Howard Fogg's career spanned half a century and some twelve hundred paintings. However, while his art has been welcomed for decades, few of his enthusiasts have been aware of his prior career, as a fighter pilot in the U.S. 8th Air Force during World War II. Fortunately Fogg left behind a detailed diary of his experiences, which illuminate this brief but exciting aspect of his life, as he engaged in direct combat with the Luftwaffe at the controls of a P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustangs. Articulate and insightful, his diary offers a frank and fascinating glimpse into the life of a fighter pilot, both in the sky and in wartime England. Written during 1943 and 1944 it offers a confidential perspective of life as a "flyboy," during which Howard flew 76 combat missions and was awarded the Air Medal with three clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross with one cluster. Presented in its entirety, with supplementary material by Richard and Janet Fogg, and supporting illustrations from Fogg himself, including satirical cartoons, military and railroad artwork, Fogg in the Cockpit paints with a broad brush, from the smallest details of a pilot's day-to-day existence, to air combat, and the strategic and political decisions that influenced the course of the war. This 6" x 9-1/4" hardcover book contains over 360 pages.

Equipped with obsolescent aeroplanes, it suffered such heavy casualties during the battles of the Somme in July 1916 that it was withdrawn from line duties. During this enforced rest it was re-established as a dedicated fighter squadron and was re-equipped with the agile Nieuport Scout, later replaced by the SE 5 and SE 5a, and later became one of the finest fighter units of the war, ending the conflict with more than 320 victories. Written by Alex Revell, this 7-1/4 x 9-1/4 softcover book contains 128 pages, including nine color plates.

North American F-86 Sabre Owners' Workshop Manual

MSRP: $28.00

The North American F-86 Sabre was the first operational Allied swept-wing transonic jet fighter of the postwar era. It was flown with distinction by the USAF in the Korean War where it was pitted against the Soviet MiG-15. The centerpiece of this Owner's Workshop Manual is Golden Apple Operations' F-86A, 48-178, the sole-surviving airworthy example of the first production Sabre A model, as well as the world's oldest flying jet-powered aircraft. Author and pilot Mark Linney describes the F-86's development and combat record and tells the incredible story of how F-86A, 48-178, was rescued from a scrapyard and painstakingly restored to flying condition. There are also full descriptions of the F-86A's anatomy and systems, as well as personal insights into flying and maintaining this legendary aircraft. This hardcover book is 160 pages long and includes 250 color and 50 black and white photos.

Red Eagles America's Secret MiGs

MSRP: $25.95

Osprey Publishing has just released a new edition of Red Eagles, America's Secret MiGs, by Steve Davies. After the publication of the first edition, several people who had been reluctant to speak with the author came forward. Their stories are included in this new edition along with recently declassified material. The book includes a foreword by General J. Juniper (ret.), Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, 2001-2005. From the mid-1960s until the end of the Cold War, the United States Air Force acquired and flew Russian-made MiG jets, eventually creating a secret squadron dedicated to exposing American fighter pilots to enemy MiGs. Following underperformance in the Vietnam War, the USAF began to study MiGs in order to improve fighter pilot training. This then developed into the "black" Constant Peg program. In this program, MiGs were secretly acquired, and made airworthy, a difficult task without manuals or parts. A secret base was found to operate the planes from and then ace pilots were found and trained to not only fly the assets, but fly them as they were flown by America's enemies. Finally, a program of exposing American fighter pilots to the MiGs was developed. In all, more than 1,600 American fighter pilots would train against America's secret MiGs between 1974 and 1989. Uncovering the story of the secret MiGs in America during the Cold War, and specifically Constant Peg and the 4477th Test and Evaluation Squadron, is a challenge because much of the information has been destroyed, or remains classified. To piece together the story of this group of men, author Steve Davies has interviewed over thirty of the Red Eagle pilots, along with other members of the squadron. This edition includes new material on HAVE IDEA and other HAVE programs; making the MiGs airworthy in 1977 from the maintainers' perspective; and intelligence activities of MiG expert, Mike Coyle, at the Foreign Technology Division. The result is a fascinating glimpse into a "black" program that enabled American fighter pilots to go into combat having already met and defeated their first MiG. This 400-page hardcover book includes two 16-page color plates with pictures of the men and planes covered in the text.

Scooter! the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk Story

MSRP: $44.95

Few modern military aircraft can claim the longevity and overall success enjoyed by the legendary Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. Also known as the "Bantam Bomber" and "Scooter", the small, subsonic A-4 first flew in the mid-1950s during the burgeoning era of larger and much more complex supersonic jet fighters. The Skyhawk broke the mold, however, by becoming America's first simple, low-cost, and lightweight jet-powered attack aircraft. Still in use today in South America, the Skyhawk enjoyed a 25-year production run. Although previous books on the Skyhawk focused on its combat career, there has never been a book that chronicled, in detail, the complete history of this historic airplane. Interviews with actual pilots and engineers who designed and flew the A-4 Skyhawk yield new insights into the workings of naval aviation and the aerospace industry. This book contains numerous never-before-published photographs showing the early development and operational history of the Navy's first and only bantam-weight fighter. Written by Tommy H. Thomason, this 8-1/2" x 11" hardcover book is 276 pages long and contains 250 black and white and 100 color photos plus 50 illustrations.

FW 200 Aviator's Watch

MSRP: $2500.00

Bavarian Crono presents the watch sensation of the year. The dial of this very special watch is cut from original metal sheets of the last existing Focke-Wulf FW 200 Condor (works number 0063, identification F8-BR), that was discovered in 1981 by Norwegian scientists in the fjord of Trondheim, was lifted from the waters in 1999 in a dramatic action and is now being restored by Airbus in Bremen as well as at Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg and Rolls Royce in Oberursel for the Deutsche Technikmuseum in Berlin. As the material for the dial comes from the Norwegian FW 200 Condor, every part is distinctively individual, just like the owners of this very special watch. The effects of salty waters has affected the metal, has left its traces in form of light corrosion or surfaces being grinded by the sands of the fjord. Small marks are no shortcomings but show the authenticity of the used material. Each watch comes with a certificate of the Deutsche Technikmuseum Berlin, that guarantees the origin of the used material being taken from the Focke-Wulf FW 200 with the works number 0063 and the identification F8-BR. The Bavarian Crono FW 200 aviators watch is priced at 1990 Euro, which is approximately $2500 in US dollars. The dial and pieces are handmade in Germany, movement is Swiss made. For each watch sold, the manufacturer will make a donation to the Berlin Museum towards the restoration of the airplane. Phone: 0049-9624-931494
