BMJR Model Products :: Airframes

Perigee

MSRP: $92.00

The Perigee was designed by Tom Brett and flown to the World Championship in 1962. One feature of the Perigee was that it was a little smaller than most aerobatic ships of the time. This led to Paul Bradley's scaling the model to 56%, to have a similar span, wing area and therefore flight characteristics of his 1/2 scale designs of the Astro-Hog, Orion and Taurus. Perigee has a 15% thick semi-symmetrical airfoil to increase the stalling speed range, with a sharp entry without a tendency to drop a wing tip. The tapered wings are intended to stabilize approaches in gusty weather, and the rudder hinge angle is sloped for more reliable spin entry. The BMJR Perigee .56 has a span of 36 inches with 200 square inches of area, giving us a wing loading of 10.4 ounces/square foot at a flying weight of 14.5 ounces. The complete laser-cut kit includes everything required to assemble the model except the covering.

Winged Shadow Systems :: Radios & Accessories

Winged Shadow Systems Thermal Scout

MSRP: $49.00

This tiny device uses a novel method to indicate thermals. When a glider is rising in lifting air, the Thermal Scout will wave the rudder from side to side. This produces a distinctive movement that is easily seen from the ground. The pilot then switches the unit off and circles in the thermal. At any time, the pilot can briefly switch the unit back on to test if the plane is still in lift (as indicated by immediate rudder movement). A series of such tests can be used to scout out the boundaries of a thermal. Weighing 1/8 ounce, the Thermal Scout is smaller than a postage stamp. It plugs in between the rudder servo and the receiver. An additional receiver channel is used to control the unit from the transmitter. An on-board atmospheric pressure sensor is used to measure lift, the same technology used in the company's popular How High Altimeter. It detects vertical movement as small as 6.5 inches/second. A unique Flight Filter algorithm is used to remove false signals due to turbulence and minor stick movements. The Thermal Scout is designed for glider pilots of all experience levels. No additional equipment is needed to use the Thermal Scout.

SIG Fan Balancer Kit

With today's electric ducted fans spinning at over 30,000 rpm, having a balanced fan has never been more critical. At these high rpms, a difference in just a few tenths of a gram can lead to excessive vibration and a reduction in thrust. The Sig Fan Balancer is a precision, high-tech instrument capable of detecting the smallest out of balance situation. It all starts with the shaft. The shaft on the Fan Balancer is made from high-speed steel (the same steel used for drill bits and machine tools) manufactured to a straightness of 1/1000mm and utilizing precision machine ground ends. Then the shaft is suspended between two powerful rare earth magnets. All that would make for a good fan balancer but Sig went the extra step. They added an adjustment screw so that you can precisely adjust the spacing so that only one end of the shaft is touching a magnet. This provides for the least amount of possible friction. It also does a fantastic job of balancing small propellers.

Surface Indicator Gauge S.I.G. Kit

(Catalog No. SIGSH901)

You've finally finished your dream model. The center of gravity is right on, the prop is balanced, and all the controls are hooked up and functioning perfectly. But wait, what about the control throws? Every model airplane kit and ARF has a specified control surface travel for each control surface. Making sure that your model matches the designer's specifications will turn a twitchy, nerve-racking handful of a model into a pussycat. Coming in on a dead-stick, final approach is not the time to find out that you don't have enough elevator control throw to keep the nose up. The SIG Surface Indicator Gauge enables you to accurately measure and set your control surface throws. It works either in a vertical direction for rudders or in a horizontal direction for elevators, ailerons and flaps. The control throws are easily measured, without the need of a third hand, on the laser-inscribed gauge in standard measurements on one side or metric on the other side. Available in two sizes. The smaller size works on control surfaces up to 89mm (3-1/2 inches) wide which are typically found on planes up to about .60 size. The larger size is for control surfaces measuring up to 152mm (6 inches), which includes models as large as 1/4 scale.

Aircraft Modelling

MSRP: $39.95

The aircraft modeling hobby has undergone dramatic changes in the last ten years. New manufacturing technologies and the rise of China have combined to make this a golden age in terms of the variety and availability of models. But these advancements can also make the hobby intimidating for those starting out. In this new edition in Osprey's Masterclass series, Brett Green describes the kits, accessories, decals and references that are now available and demonstrates a wide variety of paint types, thinners and application methods in both words and pictures. He also covers painting effects such as mottling, soft-edged camouflage demarcation, masking and weathering. Although geared to plastic modeling, many of the techniques can be used for all size models. This is the perfect book for the beginner and the seasoned modeler alike. The book covers all periods of aviation modeling, from the biplanes of WWI to the modern fighters of today. This step-by-step guide is complemented by full-color illustrations throughout. This 191-page hard cover book has an internal spiral bind, which makes it easy to use on the modeler's workbench.

Grumman F9F Panther/Cougar

MSRP: $29.95 (Catalog No. SP145)

By the end of World War II, piston-powered fighters were at their absolute zenith. As good as those airplanes were, America's aviation industry found itself starting over in the Jet Age with new airplanes powered by anemic and somewhat cantankerous turbine engines. More importantly, just as these new aircraft were maturing, they were thrust into war in the skies over Korea. Grumman's first jets were potent aircraft in their own right, but also proved to be the building blocks from which two more famous Grumman 'cats' were born - the supersonic F11F Tiger and swing-wing Mach 2 F-14 Tomcat. Grumman F9F Panther/Cougar tells the story of the pivotal F9F Panther from its initial concept through early design and manufacturing, flight test, aircraft carrier trials, and combat operations in the Korean War. Completing this story is coverage of the more advanced swept-wing transonic Cougar that goes on to become an effective trainer and photo-recon aircraft as well. Detailed appendices provide the reader with complete data on F9F production numbers, carrier deployments, and squadron histories. 8.5 x 11", 160 pages, 291 b/w and 20 color photos, hardcover.

Russian Strategic Aviation Today

MSRP: $56.95 (Catalog No. HK912)

"Russian Strategic Aviation Today" is a companion volume to "Soviet Strategic Aviation In the Cold War", which together present a unique insight into the strategic aircraft of the Soviet and Russian air forces since 1945. The Russian Air Force's strategic bomber component was inherited from the Soviet Air Force after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Russia began by recovering some of the heavy bomber assets left outside its borders, the Tu-95MS Bear-Hs based in Kazakhstan, eight Tu-160 Blackjacks, and three Tu-95MS Backfire-Cs of the bomber fleet taken over by the Ukraine. Flown by the Russian Air Force's 37th Air Army, these bombers were involved in, amongst others, the military operation to stop the Georgian aggression against South Ossetia in August 2008. President Putin's ride in a Tu-160 during a major exercise in which he performed a live missile launch is well documented, as is a visit to Venezuela by three Tu-160s which caused much dismay in the USA. Russian Strategic Aviation Today, by Yefim Gordon and Dmitriy Komissarov, includes a development and design history of the Blackjack, Bear, and Backfire, their armament, unit badges, and insignia of the Russian units operating them. Backed up by around 600 photographs, many previously unreleased, detailed line drawings, and color profiles, including individual names and nose art, this book provides a wealth of information for the historian and modeler alike. This hardcover, 8-1/2 by 11-inch book contains 200 pages.
